CranioSacral Therapy was developed by the osteopathic physician John E. Upledger. It is a gentle, non-invasive therapy used to modify and correct imbalances in the craniosacral system, which may be the cause of sensory, motor, or neurological dysfunction. The craniosacral system is a physiological system that is responsible for the production, circulation, and absorption of cerebral spinal fluid. It consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth – which make up the cranium – down to the sacrum, or tail bone area.
The craniosacral rhythm is the movement of bones and body tissues in response to the rise and fall in the production of cerebral spinal fluid. This core rhythm or motion is created by the system that surrounds the brain and spinal cord and is translated throughout the entire body. Where there are restrictions in the body, they will show up as a lack of this motion. By evaluating where these restrictions are, we are better able to locate the cause of problems rather than chasing symptoms.
The therapy has been successfully used to treat:
- back pain
- chronic fatigue
- motor coordination difficulties
- eye problems
- central nervous system disorders
